Painted entirely en plein air under moonlight, with no artificial light to guide her, Shizico Yi embraced the night with unfiltered presence. Relying solely on instinct, memory, and decades of intimate knowledge of her hand-mixed pigments, she rendered the shifting skyline and the interplay of light and shadow through pure feeling and confidence and understanding of her craft. Painting in the dark evening, she trusted her understanding of colour, tone, and gesture to guide the composition.
Every painting in this series had to be fully seen the following morning, as each was completed in near-darkness. This ritual — the suspense of painting into night and the revelation at dawn — became an essential part of the project, bringing excitement, anticipation, and a renewed sense of delight to Shizico’s practice.
The contrast between the sunset’s warm radiance and the silhouette of lime trees creates a poetic stillness. This intimate yet expansive atmosphere has made the Sunset Song Series one of Shizico’s most celebrated recent bodies of work — a quiet triumph of vision, presence, and artistic devotion.

About the Artist
Dr. Shizico Yi, the UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
