Sunset Song Series was created entirely en plein air, painted directly under the dimming light of late-summer and autumn sunsets and moonlight, with no artificial light to guide her, Shizico Yi embraced the night with unfiltered presence. Painting in the low light, she trusted her understanding of colour, tone, and gesture to give birth to these paintings
Relying solely on instinct, memory, and decades of intimate knowledge of her hand-mixed pigments, she rendered the shifting skyline and the interplay of light and shadow through pure feeling and confidence and understanding of her craft.
Every painting in this series had to be fully seen the following morning, as each was completed in near-darkness. This ritual — the suspense of painting into night and the revelation at dawn — became an essential part of the project, bringing excitement, anticipation, and a renewed sense of delight to Shizico’s practice.
This body of work is a meditation on seeing without looking — a quiet surrender to intuition, craft, and the fleeting rhythms of nature and on the deep, expressive power of painting.
The colour and tonal contrast between evening sunset against velvety outline of lime trees evokes a poetic stillness, making this small work one of Shizico’s most celebrated pieces in this year—a quiet triumph of vision, presence, and artistic devotion.
In her own words:
" What these new abstract paintings are trying to do is to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; I am having a daring courtship with colours and the simplicity of lines and forms, then to move even further closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin; I am making my abstract works under this lineage of less about the realistic representation, much more about the colours and its meaning behind the brushstrokes, to celebrate the power of imaginary spaces and the moment and the movement of my body vs my eyes.
These two masters, Matisse and Hodgkin are at the two ends of the dial, and in between is my playground for this new Abstract Series.

About the Artist
Dr. Shizico Yi, the UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
