Summer Night -Summer Bloom Series 2024-25
Summer Night is part of The Summer Bloom Series, an ongoing body of work Shizico Yi develops each summer through plein air painting in her garden.
This painting captures a view from the east end of the garden, looking toward the west gate, where towering mature trees frame areas of wildflowers on either side. Painted into the late evening, Shizico chose deep blue tones to evoke the night sky—reflecting her experience of working plein air well into summer nights, guided by fading light and intuition rather than artificial illumination.
The composition carries a quiet stillness, where structure dissolves gently into atmosphere. Colour becomes both environment and emotion, transforming the familiar garden into a contemplative nocturnal landscape.
Shizico’s work stands as a testament to her imagination, bold and ever-evolving technique, and the profound inspiration she draws from nature—particularly from her own gardens, where she grows, shapes, and continually re-imagines her living landscape.
The Summer Bloom plein air project is an ongoing seasonal practice in which Shizico Yi paints directly in her garden and on location throughout the summer months.
She began gardening in 2015 to create a healing environment for her elderly, ill Labrador. After her dog passed away, the garden transformed into a memorial space—offering both solace and a continuous source of artistic renewal as she navigated grief.
These paintings embody the intimate relationship between artist and environment. Through colour, gesture, and material, the series reflects Shizico’s enduring dialogue with nature, memory, and the act of remaking landscape as both sanctuary and canvas.

About the Artist:
Dr. Shizico Yi is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across painting, installation, and film. Her practice explores themes of loss, repetition, the everyday, and the formation of memory, weaving personal narratives into broader social and human contexts. Drawing on a background in design and film, Yi’s work moves fluidly between mediums, allowing lived experience, place, and time to shape each project.
Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art from the University of East London (2017), an MFA, and a BA in Womenswear from the University of the Arts London. Her practice is grounded in both rigorous research and embodied making.
Alongside her studio practice, Yi works en plein air from spring through autumn, returning to studio-based work during the winter months. This cyclical approach allows seasonality, landscape, and environment to inform the scale, materiality, and emotional tenor of her work.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in the UK, South Korea, and Italy, and is held in private collections across the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
In addition to her visual art practice, Yi is an award-winning filmmaker. She was the Winner of the Women Filmmakers: Best Shorts Competition in Los Angeles (2013) and has served as a guest jury member for the 14th–16th Annual New York City Independent Film Festival (2022–2024). She is also the founder and curator of no barking aRt.
