Original-Dusk to Moonlight From the Sunset Song Series-2026- After Van Gogh
Dusk to Moonlight was developed over a period of eight months, painted en plein air from the same viewpoint across three seasons between the summer of 2025 and June 2026. Returning repeatedly to a single location, Shizico Yi documented the fleeting hour between sunset and nightfall as it shifted from winter into summer.
As the seasons changed, so too did the relationship between light and time. Winter moonlight gradually gave way to the prolonged sunsets of early summer. On the final evening of painting, completed at around 10 p.m., the sky still held the brilliance of daylight: the lime tree canopies remained illuminated while velvety blues and purples gathered across the horizon. The work records this extraordinary meeting point, where seasonal rhythms alter our perception of dusk itself.
Part of Yi's celebrated Sunset Song Series, first introduced in her solo exhibition Modern Ancient at GSY Studio Gallery, London, this painting expands the original concept by considering not only the passing of a day, but the passage of seasons. Time becomes visible through colour, atmosphere, and repeated acts of observation.
Painted entirely en plein air without artificial light, Yi relied solely on instinct, memory, and decades of intimate knowledge of her hand-mixed pigments. Working under diminishing visibility, she embraced uncertainty as part of the process, trusting the accumulated understanding of her craft to guide each decision.
Inspired in part by the nocturnal intensity of Van Gogh's blue night paintings, Dusk to Moonlight is ultimately less a depiction of landscape than a meditation on presence. The tonal contrasts between the fading warmth of sunset, the deepening blue of evening, and the silhouetted lime trees evoke a profound stillness. The painting speaks of patience, devotion, and the quiet transformation revealed only to those willing to return, again and again, to the same place and look carefully.
