Moon Lit Dahlias-Gold Leaf on oil canvas Board

Sale Price: £690.00 Original Price: £800.00

Moonlit Dahlia is a large gold-leaf painting created by Shizico Yi in early autumn, when dahlias reach their fullest bloom and the first turning leaves colour the garden. Painted on canvas board with gold leaf, oil, gesso, and acrylic, this work glows with the richness of the season and the quiet poetry of change.

Inspired by the visual language of Japanese woodblock prints, the work places the dahlia at its heart. Dahlias bloom from summer into the cold of late November, brightening the garden long after most flowers fade. For Shizico, they embody resilience and the courage to keep flowering, a symbol of longevity, joy, and hope.

This painting challenges and expands the boundaries of contemporary painting.

Shizico’s distinctive approach harmonises experimentation with deep art-historical lineage—from El Greco to Hiroshige, from Matisse to Van Gogh—creating a dialogue between tradition and innovation.

Her work remains grounded in everyday life: the seasons, her garden, and the ordinary moments that become extraordinary when seen with presence. Every painting captures something fleeting and unrepeatable. Once finished, it becomes a preserved moment—a visual memory frozen in time, a testament to the impermanence of being.

The Memory Landscape Series

Moonlit Dahlia belongs to Shizico’s long-running Landscape Memory Series, an exploration of form, layer, time through gold leaf and oil on canvas. In this painting, she layers gold leaf with oil, acrylic, and gesso to create a lyrical, shimmering narrative. Dozens of moments—hundreds of hours in the garden—are compressed into a single canvas.

Shizico paints most of her work in situ, directly from life.

She began gardening in 2015 to create a healing sanctuary for her elderly dog. After her beloved Labrador passed, the garden became both a place of solace and a living studio—a space where grief, memory, and creativity intertwined.

Like a modern-day Monet, Shizico has built her life patiently around nature over the past decade. Her garden is not merely a subject; it is the wellspring of her art, her emotional landscape, and her daily companion.

The result is a landscape that holds multiple times at once, inviting viewers to journey through shifting light, days, and moods. The series reflects how presence, seasonality, and memory shape human life: growth, change, grief, renewal.
