Moon Lit Dahlias-Blue and Red-oil on canvas Board
This is an evening scene of the last full moon before the Lunar New Year in 2026, it is a part of [Jardin d'Hiver Series].
[Jardin d'Hiver] is Shizico Yi's on-going series, created in her winter studio while savouring for the summer left behind. Layering the wintery landscape with the imaginary summer colours inspired by the colours in her garden. Reflecting on the vibrant days spent painting en plein air, she revisits the Dahlias Collection in her garden during the summer.
This series is a joyful tribute to those cherished moments, through painting, she transforms her studio into a winter garden—bringing summer to life on canvas, based on the images of her summer garden the year before.
To Shizico, dahlias symbolise resilience and longevity. Their long blooming season, stretching from summer into the early winter chill, brings much-needed colour to the herbaceous border of her garden during the duller months.
Shizico is also exploring the medium of impasto in this series which enhances the vivid brushstrokes with a three-dimensional surface. By sculpting the florals into textured forms, the paintings further capture the energy and vibrancy of summer on canvas.
Colour in this series departs from naturalistic representation. Yi limits each painting to a restrained palette of three tones, chosen intuitively in response to mood. This intentional restriction pushes contrast, harmony, and tonal depth, lending the works a dreamlike quality.
