TLandscape Memory 2025: Seascape with Garden is part of Shizico Yi’s ongoing Sunlit Series, a body of work in which she explores the magical qualities of yellow and the essence of memories.

This work began as Shizico Yi’s Wild Card painting for Sky Arts: Landscape Artist of the Year 2026, created on location in Dover, England, looking across the English Channel toward France.

The plein air day was a demanding experiences: unrelenting coastal winds, eight hours of painting under intense summer sun, rapidly shifting drying times, a larger canvas battling the elements, and the constant activity of the TV crew, public onlookers, and dozens of fellow artists. Despite these challenges, she captured the raw essence of the landscape in the moment.

After filming, Shizico continued working on the piece for a further three months. In the quiet of her garden studio, she transformed the plein air study into a painting of profound personal meaning. She layered the scene with impressions of her herbaceous borders and finished the work with bold, expressive brushstrokes of gold leaf—turning a public assignment into a deeply private statement.

The result is one of her most detail layering and precious works of the year. This painting stands as a testament to the intimate relationship between material, memory, landscape, and the artist herself.

Shizico’s unique method—erasing, rewriting, and reconstructing the landscape through sweeping gold-leaf brushstrokes—explores the relationship between distraction and creation.

The gold interacts with the landscape beneath, its reflective textures conversing with the deeper layers of paint and memory, revealing her ever-evolving vision and experimental approach. The contrast between gilded surfaces and atmospheric oil forms a new visual language—one that speaks of renewal, presence, and the shifting permanence of place.
