Having a Cigarette Among Yellow and Green is one of the most loved and recognisable paintings by Shizico Yi to date. It served as the key work of her London exhibition Golden Summer (2023) and stands as a defining piece within her artistic practice.
Painted en plein air over a two-year period in her London garden, this original oil painting captures a deeply personal and poignant moment. It is a tribute to Shizico’s late partner, who would often stand in this corner of the garden, cigarette in hand, watching the light change and the day slowly dissolve.
This work belongs to Shizico Yi’s long-running project Constant Gardener (since 2015), a body of work rooted in care, memory, and the act of tending both land and grief. The painting also draws from her Golden Sunlit Series, where the introduction of vibrant yellow becomes a vital narrative force—symbolising warmth, presence, and emotional healing.
Parallel to her gardening practice, Shizico Yi has created extensive drawings and plein air paintings within this Memorial Garden, documenting the passage of seasons and preserving fleeting moments in paint. In this work, memory and landscape are inseparable, held together through colour, gesture, and devotion.

About the Project — Constant Gardener
Constant Gardener is one of Shizico Yi’s most personal and enduring projects. It began in 2015 when she started gardening to create a healing environment for her elderly Labrador, Favor, during their struggle with a neurological illness. After Favor passed away at the age of sixteen, the garden became the Favor Memorial Garden—a living archive of love, loss, and renewal.
Within this space, Shizico continues to paint, tend, and remember. Her gardens are not merely subjects but collaborators—places where grief is transformed into colour, and memory becomes landscape.

About the Artist
Dr. Shizico Yi, the UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
