About the painting:
The visual concept is based on Shizico Yi’s childhood memory of the terrazzo floors in her old family home. Shizico recreates the stone grains and layers them with her garden plein air painting in the summer bloom season.
It took her two months to finish the painting, with complex layers of paint and colour built up over weeks. She finished the painting on Strawberry Moon night, the first full moon in summer 2026, which led to the naming of the painting. This painting is a continuation of Shizico's latest series, [New Abstract], an extension of her famous long-running Sunlit Series, the result of her pursuits of progress in painterly vision is an exciting new abstract pictorial refinement.
This painting would be included in the line-up of her solo exhibition this coming winter, 2026.
This Proof is based on its original painting which was commissioned by the award-winning bakery Creammm.t for their packaging series.

** The Birth of Yellow in Shizico Yi's art Practice
In November 2017, following the loss of her beloved Labrador companion of sixteen years, Yi found herself living through a period of profound grief. For many months she struggled to paint or even to function in daily life. Seeking refuge, she visited the National Gallery in London, wandering slowly through its collections until she reached Olafur Eliasson's immersive installation, Room for one colour.
The installation transformed the gallery into a space of radiant yellow light. Sitting quietly within it, Yi experienced something she had not felt for many months: stillness. Surrounded by the monochromatic glow, she felt embraced by warmth rather than consumed by sorrow. It was a fleeting but decisive moment, revealing that colour itself could carry emotional weight and become a place of refuge.
Before leaving the gallery that day, she made herself a quiet promise. If she found her way through grief, she would one day dedicate a body of work to the colour yellow.
That promise would remain dormant for five years.
When Yi eventually began what became the Sunlit Series, to overcome another grief after her partner's death, yellow was no longer simply a pigment. It had become a memory, an experience, and a language through which she could explore healing, hope, and the quiet resilience of everyday life. The paintings do not depict yellow; they inhabit it.
Gold leaf entered her practice later. It was a natural extension of this evolving visual language, allowing light itself to become an active presence within the work. Unlike paint, gold leaf shifts with changing daylight and with the movement of the viewer, continually transforming the surface. It became not an ornament, but a material expression of renewal and endurance.
Today, the luminous yellows and gilded passages found throughout Yi's paintings trace their origin back to that afternoon in 2017, when, in the midst of overwhelming loss, an encounter with light altered the course of her artistic practice. The Sunlit Series stands as a testament to that promise: an exploration of how colour can hold memory, offer comfort, and remind us that even after the darkest seasons, light has the capacity to return.
About the Artist
Dr. Shizico Yi, the UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
