Diptych Foxgloves in Primary Colours -Summer Bloom series
This set included: Foxgloves Gold in Blue and Pink and Foxgloves Blue in Pink
Blue has always held a special meaning for Yi. Since childhood, she was drawn to it—aware that blue is among the rarest colours in the plant world. Because the sky already carries the colour, nature seldom repeats it in its flora. This rarity makes blue a magical and intentional choice. In this series, she reimagines her garden blooms in shades of blue—transforming their natural hues to explore emotional resonance.
They are a part of Shizico Yi's Summer Bloom project where Shizico celebrates the arrival of Summer, an important season for her painting plein air. The visual language of the series is inspired by Japanese woodblock Print and the a nod to calligraphy tradition.
Shizico Yi began her Summer Bloom series in 2022. Shizico has continued expanding the series each year, crafted across a range of materials—impasto, gesso, gold leaf, and oil—each adding depth and texture to her expressive brushwork, capturing the essence of her garden in its most vibrant season.
In these 2 paintings, she was working with a restrained palette of primary colours, exploring various shades of blue set against tones of red and yellow/gold. Each painting in this series, often follows a monochromatic approach, highlighting the nuanced interplay of contrast and harmony within the spectrum. This tension between hues brings a tactile energy and visual intrigue to the series.
The result is a luminous body of work that reflects not only the changing seasons of her garden, but also the deeply personal connection between the artist, her materials, and the quiet poetry of nature.
