About the painting:
Constant Gardener is a self-portrait that emerges through shadow rather than direct likeness. Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and informed by the traditions of East Asian calligraphy, the painting reflects Shizico Yi's ongoing exploration of colour, time, and space in paintings.
Painted en plein air in her own garden, Constant Gardener documents the movement of light throughout the day. She observes the shadows cast across the dahlia beds during the intensity of the Indian summer light, catching glimpses of her own silhouette among the flowers. The resulting image becomes a self-portrait: a record of being present within a place shaped by daily care and attention.
Part of the Sunlit Series, the work forms part of Shizico’s investigation into the healing and emotional power of yellow. Rather than recording the landscape faithfully, Yi uses colour as an expressive device, allowing emotion to seep through colours and subject matters. Restricting her palette to yellow in dialogue with blue and white, she explores the shifting relationships between warmth and coolness, luminosity and shade.
The incorporation of gold leaf extends Yi's investigation of yellow beyond pigment alone. The gilded surfaces intensify the painting's luminosity, creating a visual language reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints while evoking the fluidity and economy of calligraphic mark-making. Through this interplay of light, shadow, and colour, Constant Gardener transforms an ordinary moment of gardening into a meditation on nurture, renewal, and the quiet act of tending both the world around us and the self within it.

About the Artist
Dr. Shizico Yi, the UK artist working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
