Constant Gardener-Large Oil-gold leaf

Sale Price: £3,250.00 Original Price: £3,800.00

Constant Gardener belongs to two of Shizico Yi’s long-term projects: Constant Gardener and Memory Landscape Series, both initiated in 2015. Across these bodies of work, Yi explores the relationship between space, time, and memory through installation, film, photography, painting, and gardening.

This large-scale painting was created en plein air over two weeks in Shizico’s garden in Scotland. The distinctive Scottish landscape and architectural forms in the background contrast with the intimacy of her cottage garden, opening the composition into a generous, embracing space—one that feels like a quiet, restorative gesture from nature itself.

The tranquillity and healing power of the landscape are intensified through expressive brushstrokes gilded with gold leaf. In recent years, gold leaf has become a signature material in Shizico’s practice, used as a conduit between memory and the present moment. Time appears to travel across surfaces; the mind wanders gently between past and now, stillness and movement.

About the Constant Gardener Project

Constant Gardener began as a deeply personal project: the creation of a healing garden for Shizico’s Labrador, Favor, during his recovery from a neurological illness. After Favor’s passing, the project evolved into a Memorial Garden—an ongoing act of remembrance honouring both animal and human loved ones.

Her gardens in London and Scotland have since become central to her practice, serving as living studios and conceptual springboards for her paintings. Over the past decade, Mother Nature and animals have emerged as her enduring muses.

About the Artist:

Dr. Shizico Yi is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across painting, installation, and film. Her practice explores themes of loss, repetition, the everyday, and the formation of memory, weaving personal narratives into broader social and human contexts. Drawing on a background in design and film, Yi’s work moves fluidly between mediums, allowing lived experience, place, and time to shape each project.

Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art from the University of East London (2017), an MFA, and a BA in Womenswear from the University of the Arts London. Her practice is grounded in both rigorous research and embodied making.

Alongside her studio practice, Yi works en plein air from spring through autumn, returning to studio-based work during the winter months. This cyclical approach allows seasonality, landscape, and environment to inform the scale, materiality, and emotional tenor of her work.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in the UK, South Korea, and Italy, and is held in private collections across the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

In addition to her visual art practice, Yi is an award-winning filmmaker. She was the Winner of the Women Filmmakers: Best Shorts Competition in Los Angeles (2013) and has served as a guest jury member for the 14th–16th Annual New York City Independent Film Festival (2022–2024). She is also the founder and curator of no barking aRt.
