Constable’s Clouds, Van Gogh’s Blue

£2,690.00

Constable’s Clouds, Van Gogh’s Blue is Shizico Yi’s latest series—an exploration of landscape reimagined through memory and material experimentation and emotional resonance. In this body of work, she questions what landscape means in contemporary time, advancing her visual language as a pursuit of new painterly possibilities.

Through layered surfaces and evolving techniques, the series becomes both a tribute to the masters who inspire her and a deeply personal exploration of how we see, remember, and inhabit the natural world today.

Rather than homage, the works operate as a contemporary conversation with three masters whose visual languages continue to shape how we see nature: Turner, Constable, and Van Gogh. Turner’s volatile seas and atmospheric colour, Constable’s empirical cloud studies, and Van Gogh’s emotional blues are absorbed and transformed through Shizico’s own lived landscape—her garden and studio.

Painting en plein air (golf leaf flora and clouds study) and from memory (seascape from Dover, a summer visit), Shizico dissolves traditional representation in favour of a new abstract landscape, where colour becomes structure and feeling becomes form.

This painting took five months to complete. Built slowly through a dry-on-dry process, each layer was allowed to fully settle before the next was applied. The extended duration of making is integral to the work itself—time, patience, and intention are embedded within the surface. The accumulated layers reveal not only colour and form, but also the rhythm of sustained attention and care that shaped the painting.

Gold leaf—central to her ongoing Golden series—reappears as a symbolic and material anchor. Yellow, which Shizico associates with healing and renewal, interrupts the blues and greys of sky and cloud, creating a threshold between presence and memory, observation and emotion.

Rooted in art history yet grounded in the everyday, Constable’s Clouds, Van Gogh’s Blue pushes landscape beyond depiction toward an inner, imaginative space—where nature, memory, and the act of painting converge.
